During the Roman empire, September was considered the 7th month, October the 8th, November the 9th, and so on. Why is that? According to the University of Chicago, after around 753 BCE, the Roman calendar began in March instead of January and only consisted of ten months instead of twelve. This structure was created by King Romulus and was based on a combination of the lunar cycles and the agricultural seasons. However, structuring the calendar in this way wasn’t as effective because the lunar cycles didn’t match up with the earth’s rotation around the sun and therefore didn’t accurately pair with the seasons.

Organizing and Delegating-Management of Organizations Essay

Organizing and Delegating-Management of Organizations - Essay Example An effective cost reduction plan should achieve results that flow from top to the bottom line of financial matters (Mosley, 2008). The plan should be designed in such a manner that its implementation does not damage the organization itself. In fact, it is argued that a good cost reduction program should focus much on damage control as it involves cutting costs. The ways of communicating these measures are equally important, especially if it concerns salaries of the employees. Cost Reduction Plan All cost reduction plans aim at reducing costs in order to improve profitability. It is apparent that by reducing expenses, profits are increased. In the current scenario, it is apparent that most of the company’s expenses go to employee salaries. With 90 percent of the company’s expenses being channeled in one department, it becomes tricky to have an effective cost reduction plan in place. In this regard, it is advisable to have a cost reduction team comprising all departments. In the beginning, the head of the cost control team should ensure that the idea of cost reduction is well discussed with the team members. In the current scenario, since cost reduction measures will mainly focus on reducing salaries of the employees, it is also advisable to have all departments represented by employees in the cost control team (Mosley, 2008). However, the meeting should be frequent, probably once in a week. This helps the effort not to lose momentum. Every meeting’s minutes should be published and availed to the chief executive and the heads of each department. The minutes should include the status of each task in the meeting. Cost reduction team members should discuss ideas in a free flowing manner. The ideas should primarily focus on the agenda of the meeting with a contribution from team members being well recorded. Since the main area of concern is salaries, it is equally important to consider a review of other areas that could also be highly contributin g to losses. For example, the cost of raw materials, electricity, travel, maintenance, etc. may as well be reviewed (Suzue, 2002). However, the next step involves cost necessity assessment. In this regard, evaluation of the magnitude of necessity of cost items identified is done. Most crucial items should be retained, but suggested reduction should be applied. Items with less magnitude of necessity should be evaluated for other options. Issues concerning salaries range from labor costs and morale initiatives to training costs. The table below indicates a cost reduction proposal that can be used to reduce cost associated with employee salaries and benefits. Item Classification Risks Decision Labor Necessary None Keep but reduce cost Supervision Necessary None Keep Overtime Necessary Morale impact Keep but reduce Coffee Unnecessary Morale impact Eliminate Department party Unnecessary Morale impact Keep but reduce Communication Plan Before any decisions are made on the measures to use in cost cutting, it is vital to consider the number of permanent employees and those that are in contract. This sets a pace in evaluating implementation negotiations (Coombs et al., 2005). The first step involves analysis of the situation that has led to seeking the option of cost reduction. This could be termed as

Robin Hood Case Study Essay Example for Free

Robin Hood Case Study Essay 1) Create a basic organization chart for Robin Hood and his men. Robin Hood organization has a centralized top-down management style structure. Robin Hood is the CEO of the organization; his four lieutenants are directors of specific departments which are responsible for providing research and gathering information, finances, training, and provisioning. 2) What problems does Robin Hood have? What top 4 issues need to be addressed? * Misalignment of goals of the top executives and the subordinates (Robin Hood’s primarily goal is the personal vendetta with the Sheriff, while the main purpose of the majority of Merrymen is to reallocate wealth from rich to the poor or simply to gain profits) * Obsolete strategy to generate revenues (Travelers started to avoid the forest not to have their goods confiscated) * Food shortage (the growing band started to exceed food capacities of the forest) * The growing strength of the rivals (The Sheriff was growing stronger and becoming better organized) 3) Do Robin Hood and the Merrymen need a new mission and plan? Is continuing with the present course of action an option or is that now obsolete? The old mission of the Robin Hood has become obsolete due to certain changes in the internal and external environment. The old ways to generate revenues do not yield the expected results any longer as the travelers started to avoid the forest. There is mounting evidence that the old strategy is not working as the organization is facing a financial crisis. The declining vigilance and discipline of the Merrymen represent a growing problem that need to be addressed immediately. The shared enmity against the Sheriff which united the Merrymen of the organization has become of secondary importance to the new members leading to misalignment of goals. Therefore, Robin Hood and Merrymen need a new mission in order to respond to both internal and external changes. 4) Do you think make sense to impose a fixed transit tax to counter the decline in revenues? Why or why not? Imposing a transit tax on the travelers as a part of a new strategy of the organization can yield numerous benefits to its members. The flow of customers will increase as rich members will prefer to pay a tax and reach their destination faster going through the Sherwood Forest. They will not be afraid to have their goods confiscated. Transit tax will help to generate constant revenues and provide sustainable income to the group. The problems of insufficient funding and scarce resources will be solved. In order to convince the Merrymen that it is a good idea and not to lose farmers and townspeople as the allies, tax collection should be given a good cause. The part of the imposed taxes can be donated to raise the ransom for popular king Richard. 5) What is your opinion about expanding the band’s operations to a larger area around Sherwood Forest as a way of solving these problems? Why or why not is this a good idea? Expansion of the raiding area is a good tactical move as it can solve some problems associated with financing, scarce recourses, and even discipline. Since travelers are avoiding the forest, the scope of the operations needs to be extended outside of the forest in order to generate revenues. The gang needs to be broken down into smaller units in order to cover the extended area. Consequently it will be easier to train, organize, an enforce discipline in smaller units of Merrymen supervised by managers. 6) Should they try and end the campaign by killing the sheriff? Why or why not? Killing the Sheriff would only satisfy the thirst for Robin Hood’s revenge; however, it is unlikely to solve all the problems that organization faces. In fact it could also worsen the matter. The Prince would appoint the next Sheriff who would be just as bad if not worse. The friends and allies of the Sheriff would seek revenge and put more efforts into capturing Robin Hood. One of the common goals that united Merrymen which is the shared enmity and hatred against the Sheriff will be lost with the death of the Sheriff. 7) What are the pros and cons of accepting the offer of the Barons to assist in securing King Richard’s release from prison? There are numerous advantages in accepting the offer of the barons: * The gang will be granted amnesty and will not face persecution from the authorities any longer. * Robin Hood and Merrymen will eventually end the campaign against the Sherriff. * If the rescue is successful, they will return their law abiding life, become national heroes, and will enjoy the benefits of the new position such as generous rewards and protection from the new king. * By putting a fair and intelligent king on the thrown, Merrymen will help to improve the socio-economic conditions of the population of England. However, accepting the offer is a dangerous and risky venture. * Robin Hood and Merrymen will face a very powerful rival, Prince John, who has an army of trained soldiers, numerous spies, and abundant recourses. * In case of failure of the new campaign, the revenge of t he Prince John can be detrimental and can put an end to Robin Hood and his organization. 8) What course of action of the above choices would you recommend to Robin? Be specific about why you chose this and how it addresses the problems you identified in question 2. Robin should accept the offer of the barons to help to rescue King Richard. As mentioned above the new strategy of the organization will provide numerous benefits and help to solve many existing problems. New mission will align the goals and objectives of the top executive and other members of the group, ensuring consistency in overall strategy. Imposing a transient tax to raise money for the ransom will help to achieve financial strength of the organization. The travelers, farmers and townspeople who are interested in overthrowing Prince John will be willing to help Robin Hood and provide them with provision and financial resources, resolving the problems of the food shortage. Forming strategic alliance with the baron will help to gain competitive edge over the rivals. 9) How should Robin implement your recommended strategy? Make a list of the top five specific action steps (tactics) that he needs to take in order to implement this plan. * Meet with the barons (Inform the barons about accepting the offer, obtain details about King Richard captivity) * Enforce security within the organization (Stop recruiting new agents and improve internal control over Merrymen not to let the spies of Prince John find out about the new plan) * Send spies to Prince John’s court to be aware of rivals’ actions * Introduce a transient tax in order to raise money for ransom * Form a team that will deliver ransom and free King Richard 10) Show a new organization chart for Robin Hood and his men, based on whatever new course of action you recommend in question 8.

Robert Frost Essay -- Biography

Robert Frost once said, â€Å"Always fall in with what you’re ask to accept. Take what is given, and make it over your way. My aim in life has always been to hold my own with whatever’s going. Not against: with†(Quotes). Frost’s life and time period exemplified his quote as he experienced the technological changes of the twentieth century. Through these experiences, he entertained and taught his readers through his competitive poetry like his poem â€Å"The Road Not Taken†. Robert Frost was born on March 26, 1874, in San Francisco, California. William, his father, was a Journalist and Isabelle, his mother, was a teacher. His parents’ occupations sparked his early interest as a writer. Isabelle shared her love of literature and poetry with her son. When Frost was eleven, his mother took him and his sister, Jeanie, to live with his father’s parents in Lawrence, Massachusetts. William’s death left Robert and his family poor and dependent upon their cynical family members who believed Isabelle to be at fault for William’s death (DeFusco 13-15). Robert attended Lawrence High School where his mother encouraged him to maintain high academics. His desire to write poetry did not begin until the first two years of high school. Frost’s home life and inability to adjust to life in the North created his artistic aspirations. His first poems were published in the school newspaper his sophomore year. After he graduated, Frost’s grandparents ordered him to attend Dartmouth College, but he dropped out after seven weeks (DeFusco 15-16). Then Frost decided to work at a wool mill to save enough money to marry Elinor White. In the winter of 1895, at the age of twenty-one, Elinor and Frost were married. His first son was born a year later, named Elliot. Ag... ...ntieth century. This theme was one of the many ideals that sparked the Progressive Movement allowing people to have the equal opportunity determine their own destiny. When people are suddenly exposed to freedom of choice, they are slow to react and do not have a grasp of what they want. This inexperience makes people not able to differentiate between two choices thus causing a person to hesitate and doubt oneself when finalizing their judgment. When writing this poem, Frost believed that the content of the poem was more important than the style. He however paid close attention to meter using iambic pentameter and a rhyme scheme of abaab. The only style he refused to write in was free verse because he believed â€Å"a good map carried its own scale of miles†(cite). He wrote his poetry instead in â€Å"natural speaking patterns† because it was more appealing to readers.

Ethical Issue of the Contraceptive Mandate Essay

The issue of the contraception mandate may be one of the biggest political stories of the year. It is a law brought forward by the Obama administration that requires all employers to offer contraceptive coverage. This has been a requirement for all company healthcare coverage programs for many years already but religious affiliates have been exempt from following the rules. Obama is looking to change all that by requiring even religion-based employers, who have previously not offered coverage, to participate. Such services required by the contraception mandate will violate some of these religion-based employers’ moral conscience. Rule: From the contraception mandate issue, two opposing ethical rules are rights and justice/fairness. From Velasquez’s Business Ethics: Concepts and Cases, the rights rule is â€Å"an individual’s entitlement to something.† It can address the contraception mandate from both an individual and a corporate issue. The rights rule is being processed more from the religious-based employers point of view. The justice/fairness rule being discussed in this case brief is the egalitarianism view. Egalitarianism is â€Å"every person should be given exactly equal shares of a society’s or a group’s benefits and burdens.† It addresses the contraception mandate from a systemic issue Analysis: 1. Rights: Religious institutions do not want to have to cover birth control in their insurance plans for employees. Such services required by the contraception mandate will violate these religion-based institutions’ moral conscience. Thus, the contraception mandate can be viewed as an obstruction of the constitutional rights presented in the First Amendment. The First Amendment of the United States Constitution reads as following: â€Å"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.† In the First Amendment, all individuals are entitled to freedom of religion. Many of the religion-based institutions claim that the first amendment allows people the freedom to follow their religious convictions and that they cannot be forced to act against them. The government through the contraception mandate is forcing constraints on the religious freedom of the religious affiliated institutions and their employees. 2. Justice/Fairness: The justice/fairness rule of egalitarianism will say the contraception mandate is about women’s health rights. According to an egalitarian, goods should be allocated to people in equal portions. Thus, all women should have access to equal healthcare services, including the contraceptive services. The egalitarianism view argues that supporting a rights rule would limit the whole population based on someone else’s moral ideals and not scientific medical information. Women, along with many men, want to have sex for non-procreative purposes despite â€Å"edicts† passed down by religious texts. Women should have access to contraceptives. Egalitarians also argue everyone is entitled to practice their own religion and refrain from taking birth control, but every employer is prevented from discriminating against their employees on the basis of religious freedom. The reversal of the contraception mandate would be a huge setback for women’s reproductive freedom. It would go back to say women’s bodies are not their own. Conclusion: In my opinion, I believe that the rights rule is the correct approach to the contraception mandate. All companies, excluding religion-based employers, before were required to provide contraceptive coverage. Now under the Health and Human Services contraception mandate, those religious-based employers are required to provide contraceptive coverage. The First Amendment promises the entitlement to religious freedom and the practicing religious convictions. I believe forcing this healthcare service onto religious affiliated institutions is obstructing their right to practice religious convictions, hence their moral convictions. The larger portion of employed women will already be covered prior to this contraception mandate. It is only the addition of employed women at religious affiliated institutions. I am inclined to think the female employees of religious affiliated institutions would share the same religious and moral views of that religious affiliated institution. If a religious affiliated institution believes it is morally accepting for the use of contraceptives, good for them. But for a religious affiliated institution that believes it is against their religious convictions to provide employees with contraceptives, the government should not have any authority to force such a mandate. Following political backlash for the contraception mandate, President Obama has since revised the original mandate. He has added an â€Å"accommodation,† somewhat like a clause, that allows the religion-based employers the opportunity to opt out and not have to directly cover birth control in their healthcare insurance plans. The insurance company hired to cover the religious affiliated institution’s employees cannot opt out. The insurers themselves would be required to make contraceptives available free of charge to women anyway. This is a clear political move to gain more favoritism in hopes of a reelection. I see this move by Obama as an attempted reversal of the mandate after viewing the religious opposition that was evoked by mandate. Also what Obama has failed to think of are the business implications of this new â€Å"accommodation†Ã¢â‚¬â€offering the contraceptives at no cost from the opted out religious affiliated employer and employees. Insurance companies will not offer this benefit at no cost; contraceptive drug companies will not offer the medicine at no cost; and doctors will not provide treatment without payment. The only logical conclusion, at least the short run, will result in higher healthcare insurance premiums. To have avoided religious invasion, political backlash, and increased insurance premiums, I logically propose the Obama Administration should simply give women without access to contraceptive services a federal voucher.

Davids Depiction of The Death of Marat Essays

Davids Depiction of The Death of Marat Essays Davids Depiction of The Death of Marat Paper Davids Depiction of The Death of Marat Paper During the late eighteenth century French citizens were deep into fighting for a republic. Problems began when, the third estate started to fight for a horizontal form of government instead of the vertical monarchy that was taking place. To overthrow the monarchy the third estate formed the National Assembly and announced the end of feudalism and serfdom in France. But as the revolution progressed, different factions arose within the National Convention. Jean- Paul Marat, a popular newspaper publisher during the Revolution, was a representative of the Mountain faction in Pariss National Convention. The Mountain Faction represented a completely horizontal government. However, a popular bourgeois group, the Girondians, wanted a decentralized form of government in which various provinces or departments would determine their own affairs. The Girondians wanted this type of government to defend their principles of property and economic freedom. After the National Convention, Marat became disliked by the Girondians because of their opposing view points. He was especially detested by an educated Girondian woman named Marie- Anne Charlotte Corday. She believed Marat was the biggest problem of the Revolution because of the material printed in his newspaper. Corday loathed Marat and his viewpoints so much, stabbed and killed him with a kitchen knife. Marats death was a shock to France and especially to Jacques- Louis David, another political leader and reprehensive of Paris during the National Convention. David, also a prominent artist, was assigned to paint a commemoration of Marats death. The characteristics of Davids painting give Marat a religious pathos by making him appear to be a saint-like martyr. The objects in the painting suggest Marats revolutionary ethos. By painting the Marat i son dernier soupir, David also made a political statement to defile the Girondians. Various components of the painting symbolize Marat as having a religious pathos making him appear saint-like. In the Catholic society, saints are seen as superior figures in society that the community is meant to respect and emulate. During the French Revolution, Christianity was abolished making it impossible for Marat to be a saint. However, David depicted Marat as being saint-like so that the third estate would see him as a respectful leader that should be praised. David used a religious pathos to make a beneficial political statement about Marat. The painting has a lot of open space. Marats face the focal point, because it is the first object to appear out of the painting. The light and the expression on his face make him look calm and peaceful. Even though he has just been stabbed, his tranquil face makes him appear saintly because he has no fear of death. Marat has died for a noble cause. The painting also has a small spectrum of colors consisting mostly of white and brown tones. Marats body is pale and covered in white sheets, but the background of the painting is mostly dark tones which contrast with Marats body. This affect makes Marat become even more prominent in the painting. The white sheets around his body and on his head give Marat purity. The sheets make him appear more divine and glorify his death, because they suggest that Marat was an excellent leader that thought about the benefit of the Revolution before anything else. In Davids painting Marat appears to meet all of the requirements to being a saint. Marat is venerable because he is surrounded by the work of the Revolution in the painting. Marat was very heroic to be leading the people to a republic, because with so many different view points in the Revolution he, consequently, formed many enemies. In the painting, Marat also appears to have a miracle attributed to him. He has the light shinning down upon him, making him look angelic. Marat helped France to become a horizontal government which is a miracle because he gave people freedom and the ability to have control over their own country. Lastly, Marat is a martyr because he died for the Revolution. This is displayed as the deep gouge on Marats chest and the blood in the painting. Marat died for the Revolution and became one of its immortal icons. Through the symbolism in the painting Marat is displayed as being saintly. The few objects in the painting, the box, writing utensil, and letter, are very symbolic and important objects because they depict Marats a revolutionary ethos. The use of space in the painting is very simple. Marat is only surrounded by a few belongings which David wanted Marat to be associated with. The box that Marat has his paperwork on is directly in front of the green cloth that covers Marats bath. This makes the light brown box that Marat has his work on become very prominent. By doing this the box looks very sturdy and unbreakable. This is symbolic for Marats dedication to the Revolution. The box shows that Marat was always working for the revolution even when he was sick and forced to stay in his bath. The writing utensil in his right hand is extremely noticeable, despite its shady surroundings. Even the letter in his left hand and the papers under his arm are accentuated to stress the seriousness of Marats work. David wanted the audience to be able to see the physical state of Marat when he was assassinated. Even though various items that were really in the room where left out of the painting, David wanted the community to associate Marat with the work and dedication of the Revolution. David also wanted Marat to be remembered by these objects because they make him appear as though his life was devoted to the revolution. By adding remnants of Corday and by using specific coloring and lighting, David made a political statement to degrade the Girondians. David wanted to defile the Girondians in his painting because of their opposing viewpoints and because they killed Marat. The darkness in the painting is associated with the Girondians. Most of the canvas of the painting has been painted in darker tons. Where there are darker tons of colors, there are also ruminants of how Corday killed Marat. The knife Corday used to stab Marat is placed on the dark floor. The knife is also very hard to see itself. Even Marats chest, where he was stabbed, is darker than the rest of his body. Because she was a Girondians, Corday thought she was serving France by killing Marat, but the painting expresses how even though Marat was killed, the other leaders of the Mountain faction would continue to support and enforce his ideas. David was telling his audience that the Girondians would never be successful in winning the Revolution because the will of Marats followers was greater than the Girondians could ever be. The uneven parts of the lighting on the top of the canvas suggest betrayal by Corday against the Revolution, because Corday tainted the community by killing one of its popular leaders. Marat represents the light colors which are pure and good, while Corday represents the dark colors that could possibly ruin the French Revolution and all it stands for. David knew that his painting would be displayed in public, which gave him great power to persuade the ideas of the community. Because of the influence he had, David depicted Marat as having a revolutionary ethos. In his painting, Marat i son dernier soupiralso, David also gives Marat a religious pathos because it makes him appear like a saintly martyr that died for the revolution. David makes a political statement against the Girondians and Corday. During the turmoil of the Revolution, the Girondians were a faction from the National Assembly. They were a bourgeois group that wanted to protect their property and economic freedom. However, the Mountain faction favored and fought for equal sovereignty between classes. After many years of fighting the Mountain faction dominated and France became a Republic. Amongst all of the chaos, Marats death helped the third estate fight for their equality and to overthrow the monarchy.

The differences between a tough boss and a bad boss

The differences between a tough boss and a bad boss Those of us who have been in the work world for a while know all about the dreaded â€Å"difficult boss†- the boss who fills your thoughts with misery when you think about coming into work each day. The boss who somehow manages to make every work project and task more annoying and less enjoyable for everyone involved, and who’s skilled at chipping away at your confidence, self-esteem, and optimism with every encounter. Most of us have had the misfortune of having a difficult boss in our orbits and know just how unfortunate this reality can be. In fact, having a difficult boss may actually be worse for you than you even realize. Forbes recently published an article that highlighted a recent study by the University of Manchester’s Business School that uncovered a wide range of negative effects from having a toxic boss. These include higher rates of depression and negativity, lower job satisfaction, worse job performance, and a more pessimistic professional outlook - and the ripple effects spill out of the office and all over employees’ personal lives in a variety of detrimental ways. Clearly, having a difficult boss is not an ingredient for a happy life. That said, not all difficult bosses are created equally. In fact, a clear distinction should be made between the two types of difficult bosses- tough bosses and bad bosses. The short- and long-term effects they can have on you can be completely different, so it pays to know the difference. Let’s take a closer look at each of these two breeds of boss and see what makes each type tick. How to handle bad bossesMost of us know a flat-out bad boss when we see them, and the truth is that beyond a paycheck and perhaps bolstering our resumes, there’s very little upside to working with them. They’re constantly and consistently working to bring out the very worst in us and drain us of every last drop of energy and enthusiasm. Maybe it’s out of greed and selfishness for their own needs, with no regard for ours, or maybe they’re just simply terrible at being people and get some satisfaction from seeing us unhappy and squirming.Regardless of their motives, the end result of working with a bad boss is often the same- you spend way to much time trying to make them happy, which is often an elusive and unattainable goal, and you’re left miserable in the process. You often get nothing in return from the interaction and, even worse, it affects your entire life negatively. Like in any toxic relationship, you often come out of the bad boss experience shell-shocked and worse for wear, and it can take a while to shake off the ill effects. If this sounds like your situation, after diagnosing the problem you should see if there are any steps you can take to either improve the situation or minimize the impact. If there aren’t, consider whether or not it’s worth sticking it out. If not, figure out an exit strategy. How to handle tough bos sesThis breed of difficult boss doesn’t always make your professional life happy or fun, but there’s a significant difference between a bad boss and a tough boss. Where interacting with a bad boss is a toxic exchange that benefits you in no discernable way, having a tough boss can actually have the opposite effect- they can challenge you to be your best self, step out of your comfort zone, and build new and better professional skills. Tough bosses often have lofty demands and high expectations for both you and their companies, but is that such a bad thing? In fact, in some cutthroat industries where the level of competition is insanely high, having a tough boss at the helm can mean the difference between a company that navigates its way to success and a company that can’t distance itself from the crowd.Tough bosses often expect results and require a commitment to seeing things through to the end, regardless of whatever adversity or challenge rears its ugly head. But learning to face these things head-on can be great additions to your professional skill set- both at this job and in your future endeavors. Sure, there are limits, and there’s often a fine line between a tough boss and bad boss. But if the truth is that your boss often gets on your nerves and drives you crazy, but they’re actually helping you build better skills and are turning you into a better employee, then try to appreciate what you’re getting from this exchange and do your best to learn how to work with them in a way that minimizes the awfulness and allows you to continue to benefit from the situation. If you have a difficult boss, use the information here to diagnose whether your boss is tough or just plain bad. Then, take the necessary steps to make your professional life as fulfilli ng, beneficial, and stress-free as possible.

Consumer and Buying Behavior Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Consumer and Buying Behavior - Research Paper Example Marketers are using different means to analyse the factors that affect the consumer behaviour of the target market audience so as to ensure that their product mix is largely in tune with the needs and wants of the consumers. Marketers spend billions towards conducting surveys and reviews and also try to analyse the purchase behaviour in order to capture the mindset of the customers and underline the aspects that help analyse the consumer behaviour of the target market audience. The present study would also try to analyse the consumer behaviour of the customers for the online game ‘Dragon Nest’. The study would particularly try to analyse the factors that customers analyse while making the purchase decision for this type of a product. Literature Review Consumer behaviour is largely a psychological aspect that involves understanding the psychology and the thought process of the consumer undertaken in the minds of the consumer while making a purchase decision. Researchers o ften use the term determinants that are essentially independent variables that effect consumer behaviour. These factors include personality, income levels, level of education, lifestyle as well as peer groups and other social contacts. In addition to this situational aspects form the most important of the aspects that affect the consumer behaviour. Situational aspects include the physical surroundings as well as task definitions and the other physical aspects. These have a critical role in the thought process of the consumers and determine their needs and want and also determine the factors that are evaluated by consumers while making a purchase decision (Shaw, 2001, p.85-90). Figure 1: Determinants of Consumer Behaviour (Source: Shaw, 2001, p.89) The process of purchase decision largely involves the steps of recognising the problem that is succeeded by searching information on the available options, attitudes and lifestyles of the consumers, aligning the information with the aspect s of personality and lifestyles and behaviours and finally evaluating the various available alternatives and options available before them and making a final purchase decision. The behaviour and attitude towards a brand or a product does not end with the final purchase but also includes a post purchase evaluation. This is very important in the present competitive environment where the success of a firm not only comes from its ability to attract new customers but to also retain the existing customers. This aspect also assumes considerable significance in the online social networking age where reviews and feedbacks of peer groups are very pivotal in affecting the psychology of the new and potential customers (Kardes et.al, 2010, p.189). In order to deeply analyse the purchase decisions and consumer behaviour, the Black Box Model of Consumer behaviour can be applied. The figure below shows the model in conceptual form. Figure 2: The Black Box Model of Consumer Behaviour (Source: Sandhu sen, 2008, p.240) The Black Box Model as illustrated above in Figure 2 largely proposes the mindset of the consumer as a black box and includes the characteristics of the consumer as

In the news - Essay Example The whole scene was set up like a real time support system. The funny scenes were created as an effort to provide people a comic relief, as well as to market its low budget medicines directed to provide relief for single ailments, such as head-ache, insomnia, body ache etc. The scenes included a high-heel wearing model walking on a tread-mill to market for its â€Å"Help I have a blister† packet of bandages, and a performer sleeping in a store window to divert interest towards its â€Å"Help I can’t sleep† caplets (Olsen pgB3).The store team not only imparted information to passers by regarding ailments, but also distributed its head-ache packets and nausea medicine to polling stations and campaign offices. Their marketing style may seem comical and wacky, but the store founders claim to have conveyed a serious message. I have understood from my marketing insight that they have tried to simplify the buying process for the customers, who often seem confused by the varying brands and products on offer. People end up buying more than they need, due to excessive marketing campaigns, this simplified strategy of low dosages for single ailments not a host of ailments, made people realize what they aim to buy for lesser prices. Marketing should be done for people who are not experts, but still customers, who want simple solutions for complex problems, with creativity and fun all rolled into one. This campaign carved a niche for itself in the already crowded pharmaceutical market; it included viral videos, performance windows and tactile packaging to make the message clear, direct and on-the-spot (Olsen pgB3).
